Joanna Hernandez, a former ensemble member and part of the Theatre Unleashed family, recently lost her sister Diana to leukemia. In light of this tragedy, she and her family have formed Team Diana, a group whose aim is to raise $100,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. Theatre Unleashed is proud to support Team Diana and their efforts to raise funds to help eradicate these terrible cancers.
My sister Diana was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in March 2013. She received a cord blood transplant in September 2013 which gave her an extra year to spend with loved ones. Diana's cancer returned in August 2014 and she passed away in October. The cure rate for AML is low which is why a group of friends and family have joined up to raise $100,000 to match Diana's name with a research portfolio through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Diana loved traveling, hiking, horses, lighthouses, golf, dancing, karaoke, and theatre. Diana graduated from Stanford University in 2005 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. At her graduation, Steve Jobs gave the commencement address and it just so happens he talked a lot about death. In a short excerpt from his speech, he said, "Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is important." Diana was a very caring and passionate young woman who stood up for what she believed was important. She helped raise awareness and funds for LLS before she was ever diagnosed with AML. LLS has contributed to many breakthrough therapies for people with blood cancers. Their efforts are important to me, my family, and many others with loved ones who are either battling or have lost their battle to blood cancer. I would like to thank you for supporting Theatre Unleashed and in doing so, supporting LLS.
