Jacob Smith is an award-winning playwright, director, and actor from Des Moines, Iowa. He studied playwriting and Meisner Acting at the University of Iowa, before graduating from Cornell College with a bachelors degree in playwriting. He has seen his plays produced across the country, and has had his work described as containing “bare-bones moxie”. Has held the positions of Artistic Director and Artist in Residence with Theatre Unleashed, and is currently also a member of The Road Theatre.
Jacob has been directing for the stage for most of the last decade, including Landscaping the Den of Saints, The Birthday Boys, 25 Plays Per Hour, Boy Gets Girl, Three Can Keep a Secret, The Woman in Black, Dark Star, and the upcoming Dry Bones.
He studied playwriting at The University of Iowa, and received his playwriting degree from Cornell College. He has had 3 full length plays: Blue Screen, Landscaping the Den of Saints, and Hotel Iowa produced across the country. Jacob has had shorter work produced in dozens of sketch comedy shows around Los Angeles, and his short play concept 25 Plays Per Hour has been well received in four different fringe festivals including Hollywood and San Diego Fringe. Jacob’s short play 5 Minute Life, was featured at The Road Theatre’s Summer Playwrights Festival in 2016.
Jacob has won multiple acting awards, most recently a Valley Theatre Award for Best Actor in a Lead Role, for his performance in TU’s production of Cake. With TU Jacob also acted in the critically acclaimed The Woodsman, The Tempest, All the Kings Men, and All in the Timing.
